El jueves de la semana pasada, la Comisión de Comercio Internacional de Estados Unidos (USITC), una agencia federal independiente y cuasi judicial, determinó no imponer medidas de salvaguarda a las “berries” (frescas, refrigeradas o congeladas), específicamente los arándanos azules.
La investigación de medidas de salvaguarda “global” inició en octubre 9, 2020, a solicitud del Representante Comercial, durante la administración Trump, y habría podido impactar a estas berries de más de 10 países, incluyendo México. En suma, los cinco comisionados de la USITC determinaron que las importaciones de arándanos azules no causan daño ni amenazaban a la industria de EE.UU.

Esta determinación fue fuertemente celebrada y aplaudida por la Secretaría de Economía, y otros agentes políticos.
En 2019, las importaciones de “blueberries” en EEUU, originarias de méxico, fueron $291,060,437 dólares.
Este lunes 15 de febrero, la Dra. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala fue electa como Directora General de la OMC después de un proceso que duró nueve meses y en el que participaron 8 candidatos. Ella será la primera mujer en la historia que dirigirá la OMC, su encargo comenzará a partir del 1 de marzo y hasta el 31 de agosto de 2025, con la posibilidad de que su mandato se renueve por otros cuatro años.
La nombramiento de la Dra. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala surge después que la Ministra de Comercio de la República de Corea, Yoo Myung-hee, retirara su candidatura y la administración del nuevo Presidente de los EE.UU., Joseph R. Biden Jr., expresara su “apoyo firme” y así conseguir el consenso de los miembros de la OMC.
La Dra. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala es economista experta en finanzas globales y desarrollo internacional con más de 30 años de experiencia trabajando en Asia, África, Europa, América Latina y América del Norte. Fungió dos veces como Ministra de Finanzas y de Relaciones Exteriores en Nigeria, siendo la primera mujer en ocupar ambos de dichos cargos.
La próxima Directora General de la OMC es considerada como una formadora de consenso eficaz y una mediadora que goza de la confianza de los gobiernos y otras partes interesadas.
En su declaración ante el Consejo General de la OMC, la Dra. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala señaló que una de sus prioridades fundamentales es colaborar con los Miembros para abordar las consecuencias económicas y sanitarias provocadas por la pandemia de COVID-19.
