Our Managing Partner Adrián Vázquez participated as a panelist in the American Regional Round of the ELSA WTO Moot Court Competition, organized by ELSA. This prestigious international competition involves a simulation of a commercial dispute in the Dispute Settlement System of the World Trade Organization, and that took place at the American University in Washington, D.C. from 21 to 25 March.
Besides our partner, other internationally recognized experts in WTO Law participated as panelists, for instance, Ricardo Ramirez and Jennifer Hillman, former Appellate Body members of the WTO, and Santiago Wills, Colombian trade lawyer. In this round, the law-student teams from prestigious and high-quality universities analyzed the assigned case and exposed their arguments in front of the panelists.
The 22 best teams in the world, four of the American continent, will have the opportunity to participate in the Final Round that will take place at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
In this sixteenth edition, the case was Borginia– Measures Affecting Trade in Textile Products that is about trade and environmental issues as well as the implementation of mitigation programs, involving labels and the payment of taxes/import duties based on carbon emissions.
This is the second time that our Managing Partner, Adrian Vázquez, is invited to participate in this prestigious competition as a panelist. Adrian Vázquez is on the indicative list of governmental and non-governmental experts who may sit on WTO dispute panels since March 2011.
In Vázquez Tercero & Zepeda, we hope that in the next edition more Mexican universities participate, and take it seriously.
